I posted about this before. Here is the trailer. Showtime kinda sucks, but this looks like it could be good.

The only problem I have is that it's set in the 90's, which is all the rage right now and IMO, overdone. I would almost prefer it to be set in modern day so it can include the impact MLM's have had on social media. There's an antiMLM on reddit and I'm facinated by how these hun's, bossbabes and mama's operate. The balls these fraus have to make fools out of themselves never gets old.

I agree with you. Also, in the 90s, MLM reps weren't annoying compared to the MLM reps in today's social media world . My mom's friend who sold Avon in the 80s and 90s. She had a regular job as a dental assistant. She treated Avon as a side gig to earn some extra money and get product discounts. She didn't push people to join Avon and if people didn't want to buy products she was fine with it. She did have loyal customers because many people did and still do like some of Avon's skincare products. My cousin sold Tupperware back then and she wasn't pushy or annoying.
With social media, MLM reps are annoying as fuck and they constantly barrage people with the various bossbabe posts. The worst MLM hun I know constantly complains about how no one supports her "small business", but yet they buy celebrity endorsed makeup products. The hun also threw a bitch fit when she signed up to have a booth at a crafts fair and they asked for a booth fee.

R12 I saw a lot of her social media posts. She was shilling the MLM crap 24/7 and claimed that her lupus and other health issues were improved because of the Thrive crap. One of the big issues with shady MLM companies is that they sometimes target people with chronic illnesses or disabilities. A friend of mine has multiple sclerosis and she has been approached by MLM reps claiming their products could help cure her MS.

If any of you have time to kill, read the anti-MLM reddit thread. These women are using dead children and personal tragedies in order to sling more shit on social media. It is insane. You have concerned distant family members posting stories .... who for the most part have been ignored until 'niece' invites them over out of the blue just to hit them up with a super pushy sales pitch ... DEMANDING hundreds of dollars a month
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 13, 2019 6:58 AM |
One fascinatingly bad rhetorical strategy that MLM-ers of all stripes like to use is, "No, YOU work for a pyramid scheme! You have a boss who makes more than you do!"
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 13, 2019 7:52 AM |
There’s a Fb group - “Sounds like MLM but ok” - which is a bit like a support group for friends and relatives of huns. People share screengrabs of the posts and conversations they have had to endure. My sister is a #bossbabe and it’s been interesting to see how all these MLMs, and the huns, are so similar in their tactics, language etc. Whatever the product, and wherever they are in the world, from the US or UK or Australia, they are all posting variations of the exact same shit all the time.

I have been reading those threads for about a year. There was one thread about a woman whose husband has ALS and is pretty much completely paralyzed and is on ventilator. She had a picture of him in his hospital bed with essential oil bottles laid out on him so she could promote her Young Living oil business.
I have a friend who is a nurse and has extensive education/training in nutrition and fitness. He teaches kickboxing classes a couple of times a week at a fitness center. He was telling me about how a woman who was teaching yoga classes there was trying to get people into buying Juice Plus products. There are crap supplements sold in capsules, gummies, and food bars. He figured right away that she was in a MLM scheme because he has encountered similar situations with Herablife and Shakelogy reps. At that point, he hadn't heard of Juice Plus. He went home and searched online and found complaints about the products. He looked through the listed ingredients and saw that they were mostly sugar and other artificial crap.

Hun (noun) 1. a member of a warlike Asiatic nomadic people who invaded and ravaged Europe in the 4th–5th centuries. 2. a frau who sells candles, essential oils, skin cream etc. through an MLM company, and posts incessantly on social media about her “business” and how she is a #bossbabe

You know who's vague about the meeting they're inviting you to? Serial killers.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 14, 2019 2:06 AM |
I'm the one who lives by Amway. The last time was the last straw, I met a couple at my apartment complex (now I have a home) and they invited me over on a Saturday night. I brought along some food and they came to the door in their Sunday clothes, I walked in and they went through a long Amway spiel. I was mad as hell because I thought it was an evening of socializing and I was tricked. I learned later that Amway tells their reps not to tell the person you are with Amway, they trick you.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 15, 2019 11:11 AM |
In high school I worked at a hotel where one of my jobs was setting up the meeting rooms, and 2-3 times per month I would do an Amway meeting. I would set the room up and then sit on the other side of the wall reading a book until it ended. Then I'd go in and reset the room for whatever was going on the next morning.
I heard the pitch so many times I knew it better than the people giving it. Most of them were hopelessly bad, and the poor people sitting through it couldn't wait to make their escape. Once in a great while though one of the big shots from corporate would run the meeting, and man, those guys were good. They hit every note, and when the meeting ended it would be another hour before I could get in there because there were so many people signing up.

There was this movie where the main character was nervous about this couple because he thought the couple was trying to initiate a threesome . I've watched the first three episodes. Kirsten Dunst is fantastic -- the series less so. I like Théodore Pellerin as the FAM toady though. It sometimes feels like People of Walmart come to life, but I assume it will become more resonant as it develops.

Dunst is really, really good and Théodore Pellerin is funny, sad and a little self-consciously adorable, which is great. The neighbors are good characters. Unfortunately, it feels like the show exists more as a critique of Amway and less as a story about the characters. I hope that evolves because honestly it’s the only part of the show I don’t have any interest in. I have enjoyed Dunst’s character’s relationships with the alligators much more! They kill and eat her husband, she kills and eats them...

But that's the selling point of the show. These sort of multi level market-pyramid schemes have been surprisingly undercovered in pop culture when you realize how big of huge of an industry it is and how many people have been roped into the scam.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 2, 2019 3:10 PM |
R52 That’s fine and “important,” I guess. I am just more interested in seeing these characters develop than I am in learning about an abusive industry. I thought the way “Go” treated it was funny and sufficient.

She is an executive producer on this show, and one detail I love is the braces. I wonder if that was in the original script or not. I used to see Perez Hilton, Dlisted and all those cruel celebrity blogs make fun of her teeth every time her name came up because her teeth aren’t Hollywood-perfect. I love that her character had braces and then liberated herself by taking them off, revealing slightly imperfect alignment. I hope she added that to the storyline as a fuck-you to all the assholes that mock her appearance.

Like r40 I HIGHLY recommend the podcast called The Dream, breaks down the history of MLMs and what's it like living it. Only 7 episodes so not a huge commitment. Did you know the DeVoss' got their money from Amway? And Gerald Ford gave Amway a pass during a federal investigation because they were big donors from his district... I never knew.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 3, 2019 12:05 PM |
By all means, give Kirsten Dunst a glamorous makeover. Cut her up and smooth and plump everything, give her some butt-length extensions and a Jon Benet spiral curl and some flippers for that perfect smile!
How are we supposed to believe this character is a destitute single mother who works at a Florida amusement park if she doesn’t look like Margot Robbie in full drag, with sequined gowns and Louboutin heels? No one will buy it!

Pellerin shaking his tooshie on stage like a pro damn near hypnotised me. What a cute homosexual that is. Seriously, where has he been all this time?

by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 4, 2019 12:42 PM |
Pellerin’s super-flamboyant dancing and the kid’s dancing were good parallels. I really hope Pellerin’s character is a repressed homo because if he’s supposed to be straight, there goes my suspension of disbelief.

Didn't Dunst's character seduce him this past episode? He seemed to quickly give into her flirtations, don't think he is supposed to be gay.
[quote]You think the 9 year old son is gay?
Now the kid they laid the groundwork is definitely an inner queen.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | September 5, 2019 4:17 AM |
R81 She lured him into a closet and locked him in there. (Read that metaphorically or not.) She didn’t really seduce him because it didn’t go anywhere. She was flirty and he did follow.
We’re obviously going to learn more about Pellerin’s character layer by layer. First he was the charismatic motivational speaker, and then we saw he’s a conman. Then we saw him starstruck over meeting the founder of the company as he got out of the helicopter, and the founder rejected Pellerin and he was obviously very upset. I assumed that was all business—but then we saw him at prison, trying to talk to his inmate father with the power of denial, but his father refused to talk to him. And then Dunst flirted with him and he followed.
Why has his father rejected him? We don’t know yet, but after seeing that flamboyant dancing...
Anyway, it seems to me Pellerin’s character motivation is finding acceptance and love from anyone who will give it, because he can’t get it from anyone. And so he has become a figurehead cult leader to get adoration of masses of people, but it’s all a con based on exploiting them. Skarsgaard was similar in that regard; he had an inferiority complex. Dunst is not the same; she is aware of her abilities of being able to sell to and manipulate people but no one will give her an opportunity and so she’s taking the opportunity to beat them at their own game. She doesn’t have the love void most of the other characters do and so she can make wiser decisions.

I don't want Ernie and his family hurt but (no spoilers please) since he is such a good hearted person I think he will be a terrible salesman and go broke from the pyramid scheme.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 5, 2019 1:11 PM |
R83 Seems inevitable. I admire Dunst’s character’s resilience, but deciding to prey on her best friend and his family makes me want to see her eaten by alligator. However, her apparent intention in episode three before she made a surprise switch (I won’t spoil it.) makes me think she will keep surprising us. The show is billed as a dark comedy, so hopefully it won’t be a real tragedy.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 5, 2019 1:18 PM |
But that's how MLMs work, the only way to actually be successful is to take advantage of a lot of people under you. If Dunst character is "becoming a God in Central Florida", there will inevitably be bodies left behind in her wake.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 5, 2019 1:22 PM |
Maybe, but I have a (here comes a theory, not a spoiler) that she’ll (obviously) be discovered by the founder of the company and promoted to being a very high-level influencer, actually get rich, and then ultimately out the whole thing as a scam and a fraud...and in doing so, she’ll probably find a new way to con people and find some poor young person to mentor.

I just noticed the episode description on Amazon says she catches a bird sickness. That went over my head. I thought she was just being pushed to being overtired like her gatorbait hubby.

That dream sequence came out of nowhere, wtf. Pellerin is so pussy whipped, it's hard to watch at times. Poor boy.

Yes, I couldn't believe when Julie Benz and her husband revealed they had to take out a second mortgage to finance this crap.

This is one of the worst television shows I’ve ever seen. It aims for quirkiness but it’s just a mess.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 21, 2019 8:16 PM |
I mostly like the show so far, R112, but see where you are coming from. A lot of plot is thrown at the viewer, and I’m not sure if the writers will be able to tie everything together in a sensible way by the end of th season. The latest episode was entertaining, but messy.
Pellerin’s character could be gay, despite the sex with Krystal - have we ever seen that Bonar is actually aroused by her? He’s deeply insecure, is starved for affection of any kind, and depends on Krystal to make money as part of his downline. He’s unlikely to refuse sex if Krystal wants it. There did appear to be physical chemistry between Bonar and Alexander Skarsgaard’s characters.

I'm enjoying it, Kirsten is doing an amazing job with this role.

I really like it, right now I am watching a few new shows and this actually is my favorite.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 21, 2019 10:24 PM |
I watched a few episodes. It's all over the place. Ultimately I didn't care. The characters are excessively cartoonish.

I like the alligator scene.

Today’s episode is good...plus...KATE BUSH!
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 22, 2019 1:41 PM |
I agree R113 I’m enjoying the show, overall. However, it’s really messy and the writing and editing is all over the place. There are so many characters coming and going. I completely forgot about the Cuban reporter until tonight’s episode, for example.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 23, 2019 5:52 AM |
Dunst is doing a remarkable job. The story is quirky and sometimes all over the place, but there are many amusing moments. They're building something with her character and the MLM scheme...enough to want to hang in there to find out. Timothee Pellerin is really homely, but the more I watch, the more appealing he becomes.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | September 25, 2019 7:11 PM |
His name is Théodore and he should be getting Timothée's work.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 25, 2019 7:28 PM |
r120 that really says more about your attention span and capacity to retain information than it does about the show.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 26, 2019 3:20 PM |
The Cuban reporter was intentionally left out for an episode or two, so we would be led to believe nothing came of her giving her contact info to Dunst. Dunst now remembering to call her shows just how resourceful she is.
I like the show but it's one of those slow burns. However, I really don't appreciate the animal cruelty on display - first shooting the alligators, then killing that parrot in a fire (hysterical! 🙄), killing a pelican, having dead flamingos in the pool, and now shooting an old dog. This needs to stop; find some other way to shock and elicit an emotional response from the viewers.

Though I feel like next season is probably enough.
I really don't see this as a show that needs to run for many years.

Ernie has gone off the deep end, his poor wife

r130 but Cody is totally a cult member, if Obie tells him to kill Krystal he would
by Anonymous | reply 131 | October 2, 2019 12:52 AM |
Agree wholeheartedly r87. Those who think the floppy faced muscle-tone free Pellerin is a hot piece deserve a vicious slapping.
Overall the show is good, though all over the place at times, as others have mentioned.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | October 2, 2019 3:09 AM |
Pellerin is great in this role, whether you think he is hot or not is a little besides the point.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 2, 2019 3:12 AM |
You guys are vicious. Théodore Pellerin is 22 years old. Twenty-two! He’s very good in this role and I don’t think he’s ugly. And why does every guy, even someone of this young age, expected to look like a professional gymnast these days? He’s playing a doofy loser in Orlando in the early 1990s. And he’s good at it.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 2, 2019 3:18 AM |
I didn't know it was set in the early 90s.

At only 22, Pellerin has impressive range at 22. The idiots here who need generic Sean Cody clones are brain dead.

So that was the season finale?
by Anonymous | reply 146 | October 21, 2019 12:41 AM |
I don't find this show messy. It's deliberately loopy. But behind everything is a cold look at American culture and capitalism and it's grim. Black comedy indeed.

Love this show. It's very good plus Cody is HAWT
by Anonymous | reply 148 | October 21, 2019 2:14 AM |
Cody actually looked handsome at the end of the show last night. Kirsten is perfect for this role. I loved Ernie's wife finally speaking up.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | October 21, 2019 12:51 PM |
Could we be consistent, girls? Théodore Pellerin plays Cody Bonar. Kirsten Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs. Please discuss them as Théodore and Kirsten or Cody and Kystal, and not Cody and Kirsten. Failure to comply will be punished by either awarding or withholding 30 lashes from Théodore's gros chibre Québécois, depending on your taste.

Kristen is divine, as always
